The Showdown in America Rolls On!

January 26th, 2010 by Sally Brzozowski

Remember October’s Showdown in Chicago?  Thousands of concerned consumers rallied in Chicago at the site of the American Bankers Association convention to raise awareness for the need for better consumer protections from financial products.

Today, the Showdown continues in its new form as “the Showdown in America” and it could be coming to a city near you!

The latest Showdown event occurred today in Des Moines, Iowa.  Local consumers rallied to ask their elected officials to stand up to the big banks, especially in the wake of the budget crisis in their state government and across the country.  The Showdown organizers say that “these state budget deficits could be wiped out if the Big Banks ‘donated’ their packages (estimated to be about $140 billion) back to the states.”

If you want to get involved in the next Showdown event in your area, keep reading our blog and follow the latest actions of the Showdown in America.

Showdown in Chicago a Huge Success

October 28th, 2009 by Sarah Byrnes

As expected, the Showdown in Chicago drew thousands of protesters and attracted a wide array of media attention.  The Huffington Post has especially good coverage of the events, including the video below, a slideshow of pictures, video of remarks by Senator Dick Durbin, and plenty of other videos at this page.

Above, listen to NPA Director George Geohl and a borrower facing foreclosure who spoke to the Huffington Post at the protest.  Geohl talks about the audacity of banks who led the economy into ruin and are now doing their best to retain the status quo:

It’s insane that the same financial institutions that created the foreclosure crisis, sent the economy into a tailspin and needed billions and billions in taxpayer bailouts are now leading the charge to kill financial reform. It makes no sense.

Will the big banks make amends?

October 27th, 2009 by Sally Brzozowski

You can’t change the past, so will you commit to do better in the future?  That’s what consumers are asking the big banks at their annual conference in Chicago.

Concerned consumers have been rallying in Chicago since Sunday in opposition to the financial institutions who have gathered there for the American Bankers Association annual conference.  They’ve held press conferences and meetings about the desperate need for reform, and called out the banks for standing in way of progress in the form of the Consumer Financial Protection Agency.

This morning, protesters delivered a letter to the CEO of Goldman-Sachs, asking that the company make up for the trouble it has caused American homeowners.  They asked the company to donate its entire $23 billion bonus pool for 2009 to “prevent every foreclosure in America in 2010.”

The Chicago Tribune has on-the-ground coverage of the Showdown, including a slideshow of recent photos here.

The Showdown in Chicago officially ends today, but consumer actions in favor of financial reform will continue.  Keep reading this blog for more information about how you can make a difference in the fight for fair lending laws.

Raise Your Voice at the Showdown in Chicago

October 5th, 2009 by Sally Brzozowski

Consumer advocates have a message for the banking industry: bring it on.

From October 25 – 27, thousands of concerned Americans will gather in Chicago to make their voices heard during the American Bankers Association Convention.  This series of demonstrations and rallies is intended to remind the industry of the power of the people.

We paid for Wall Street’s bailout and they returned the favor by raising interest rates, adding service fees, charging ridiculous amounts for slight overdrafts, and refusing to modify mortgages.

AFFIL has endorsed the upcoming events in Chicago, and now we’re asking for you to support it too.

If you’re able, join the Showdown in Chicago, and raise your voice in favor of financial reform and a fair financial system.  If you’re not in the area, you can contact your elected officials using our online system.

In this David vs. Goliath match-up, consumers need all the help they can get.  Continue to follow our blog for more ways to get involved.
